Some of you may have learned that you couldn't co-regulate with your caregivers at a very early age: they weren't reliable or consistent, so you had to "survive" in other ways.
This coping pattern can turn into avoidance, self-isolation, shutting down, and even dissociating from our experience when we are feeling dysregulated as adults.
As a result, you might push people away when you're hurting, only to feel even worse.
When we examine the situation more closely, it often turns out that the inner child within us truly wants to be seen, supported, and cared for and that we can learn to choose connection even if we've learned to shut down and avoid.
